Master 299 - Tape 1 Countdown: Norad Part I - Along the extreme north rim of North America stretches the Distant Early Warning (DEW) line, built in the 1950s. This series of radar outposts would signal the alarm should enemy planes attack via the polar route. Stations of the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS) were added in the early 1960s in Greenland and Alaska (see Greenland). South of the DEW line is the Mid-Canada line. Roughly along the United States-Canada border is the Pinetree System. All these warning systems are connected with the combined North American Air Defense Command (NORAD) headquarters at Ent Air Force Base in Colorado, a key component in the nation's vigilance against the threat of nuclear war. Countdown: NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) - Great establishing shots of NORAD operations w/natural audio.
Nicely shot color footage of a cruise to Greece and Turkey on the ss STELLA MARIS in the late 1960s or early 1970s. Highlights include: an unidentified ceremony with dignitaries at some sort of monument; harbor views, including fishing boats and seagulls swarming; good CUs of people at outdoor market and butcher shop with meat hanging; views from the ship of other vessels; shots of ship departure (viewed from dock) with passengers at rail; land views of impressive ruins and columns; peasant woman CUs; Istanbul from the water; on deck scenes with passengers reading and sunning in deck chairs, and a nice sunset. It's Kodachrome original with good color and exposures throughout.
